Quairlity: The AI-enabled indoor air quality solution wins Rep. Chris Deluzio’s 2023 Congressional App Challenge in Pennsylvania’s 17th District
Rep. Deluzio has named Vivan Poddar, a 10th grader at Shady Side Academy, as the winner of the 2023 Congressional App Challenge in Pennsylvania’s 17th District.
When asked what inspired the creation of Quairlity: The AI-enabled indoor air quality solution, the student said, “After learning about the effects of a person’s air environment on their health from various pieces of media, I felt that not enough was being done to address the issue. In particular, many older buildings in the city of Pittsburgh struggle to maintain healthy standards of air quality, which is compounded by the rising effects of global warming and pollution. The existing solutions are lacking, both in functionality and in the user experience. In addition, these solutions are not tailored towards the average person. Fueled by the need for change, I decided to solve this problem. My vision for this app included four features: a simple UI, data visualizations, multi-sensor system support, and most importantly, AI integrations that would assist the user in their pursuit for improving their air environment. Through the UI, I aimed to ensure that anyone, regardless of their technical background, could easily navigate and benefit from the app, thus making this technology more accessible to the average person. Through the data visualizations, I ensured that users can interpret their air quality data effectively. Using the sensor showed me that indoor air quality is a real issue. In just three of the locations I tested my app in, my school, home, and a local religious institution, all showed heightened levels of either CO2 or PM2.5 concentrations at some point, which the AI chat bot promptly informed me of and guided me in devising solutions. Based on my testing, I believe that my app can have a real-world impact and foster healthier indoor environments for society.”
This year’s Challenge saw an unprecedented level of participation, with 374 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions, surpassing the previous record of 340. A remarkable 11,334 students from across the United States competed in this year’s Challenge, marking an impressive increase of nearly 1,000 participants compared to the previous record set in 2019. The enthusiasm and creativity these students display is a testament to the growing interest in technology and signal a bright future for American innovation. The surge of ingenuity continued with a whopping 3,645 original applications flooding in, nearly a thousand more than the previous year’s high. This remarkable growth showcases the exceptional talent and innovation within our nation’s youth.
The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival. The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from Omidyar Network, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.
The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2024, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
