StudyHive wins Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi’s 2023 Congressional App Challenge in Illinois’s Eighth District
Rep. Krishnamoorthi has named Siya Choudhary and Siya Jariwala of James B Conant High School as the winners of the 2023 Congressional App Challenge in Illinois’s Eighth District.
When asked what inspired the creation of StudyHive, the students said, “In the digital age, education has undergone significant change due to the influence of technology. This transformation has brought about a significant shift in the way students learn and teachers instruct. Technology, in its various forms, has taken on vital roles in reshaping the educational experience, offering both opportunities and challenges.
However, the increasing use of technology in education has also given rise to growing concerns. The very devices and platforms that have the potential to enhance learning can become sources of distraction for students, both inside and outside the classroom. Smartphones, social media, and countless other apps and websites can lure students away from their educational tasks, often leading to reduced productivity and diminished study habits. The constant allure of notifications and online entertainment can be particularly challenging for students to resist.
As students ourselves, we have witnessed the profound effects of this digital transformation on our educational experiences. We are part of a generation that has seen the shift from traditional textbooks and classroom lectures to interactive e-learning platforms and virtual classrooms. While these changes have offered tremendous benefits, we have experienced, firsthand, the distraction dilemma brought on by the very technology that was meant to empower our learning experiences. One of the most glaring challenges we face is the smartphone in our lives.
In response to these challenges, we have come to realize the pressing need for innovative solutions that harness the power of technology to empower us to regain control over our study habits and boost our productivity. This recognition led to the creation of StudyHive, an app designed to revolutionize the way students approach their academic pursuits. StudyHive capitalizes on the presence of smartphones in the lives of students by offering a comprehensive suite of features that transform these potential distractions into valuable assets for the diligent student.
Our aspiration for StudyHive is not only to enhance the educational journey but also to facilitate a shift in how we perceive and use technology for a purpose. We believe that technology should be harnessed as a means to empower individuals and enable them to achieve their academic goals, rather than as a source of distraction and procrastination.”

A remarkable 11,334 students from across the United States competed in this year’s Challenge, marking an impressive increase of nearly 1,000 participants compared to the previous record set in 2019. The enthusiasm and creativity these students display is a testament to the growing interest in technology and signal a bright future for American innovation. The surge of ingenuity continued with a whopping 3,645 original applications flooding in, nearly a thousand more than the previous year’s high. This remarkable growth showcases the exceptional talent and innovation within our nation’s youth.
The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival. The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from Omidyar Network, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.
The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2024, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
