CarbonQuest wins Rep. Seth Moulton’s 2023 Congressional App Challenge in Massachusetts’s Sixth District

Rep. Moulton has named Rakshit Rangaprasad of Mystic Valley Regional Charter School and Sameera Murthy of North Reading High School as the winners of the 2023 Congressional App Challenge in Massachusetts’s Sixth District.

When asked what inspired the creation of CarbonQuest, the students said, “Climate change affects us close to home. In the New England area, temperatures have risen on average 3 to 4 degrees Celsius, and sea level has increased an average of 1 to 4 feet. This is considerably higher than the national average, and correlates with the increase of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. We’ve also experienced shorter winters and longer summers. When we were kids, winter was a season that we used to love. Recently, snow has started to become very scarce, and even if it does snow, the amount is very little. This is taking away the charm of our New England nature and destroying its ecosystem.

Climate change and global warming, though, is not limited to New England of course. It is a global issue that causes disasters like desertification and that will displace millions from their homes. The Paris Climate Agreement states that Earth’s global temperatures should not go above 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit, but we are slowly reaching that point at 2 degrees Fahrenheit right now. Growing up on the emergence of this crisis, we believe that we need to be the changemakers, taking steps to solve this issue. Knowing that all of us can make any contribution, whether big or small, to reduce our carbon emission footprint, we decided to make an app that allows people to set small and simple carbon emission goals with visual feedback on how they are meeting these goals. We both believe that if everyone takes the right steps to reduce their own carbon footprint, then we as a society can collaboratively make change on a problem that will, one way or another, affect all of us.”

This year’s Challenge saw an unprecedented level of participation, with 374 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions, surpassing the previous record of 340. A remarkable 11,334 students from across the United States competed in this year’s Challenge, marking an impressive increase of nearly 1,000 participants compared to the previous record set in 2019. The enthusiasm and creativity these students display is a testament to the growing interest in technology and signal a bright future for American innovation. The surge of ingenuity continued with a whopping 3,645 original applications flooding in, nearly a thousand more than the previous year’s high. This remarkable growth showcases the exceptional talent and innovation within our nation’s youth.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival. The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from Omidyar Network, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.

The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2024, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
