Moodle: Memorized Doodles wins Rep. Salud O. Carbajal’s 2024 Congressional App Challenge in California’s 24th District

Rep. Salud O. Carbajal has named Jiyoo Kim-Jung of Dos Pueblos High School, Seungyoo Kim-Jung of Goleta Valley Junior High School, and Aaron Xie of Dos Pueblos High School as the winners of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in California’s 24th District.

When asked what inspired the creation of Moodle: Memorized Doodles, the students said, “We were all inspired differently, but as teenagers and a tweenager trying to navigate the obstacles of academic life, all of us had the need for an efficient way to study. While paper cards are tactilely pleasing, it is not convenient. We can lose it easily. It’s bulky. It’s easy to forget it when we need it. Because of this, we used flashcard apps instead of paper flashcards when we were studying for tests at school. Our favorite app was the Anki flashcard app. It offers a good amount of tools, such as a ranking system (easy, moderate, difficult, etc), spaced memorization tools, etc. These are all good, but we realized that so many of our beloved flashcard apps, including Anki, did not have a drawing/handwriting tool. It felt quite restricting. Sometimes, we just wanted to quickly jot something down on the phone screen for future study, or draw a Lewis structure to look back on. But all these apps required us to type in something. It’s pretty difficult to type a Lewis structure diagram. Furthermore, those typed words looked very small on the screen, which did not feel good for studying. These reasons were why we wanted to have an app where we could draw on the screen, instead of typing. Since the app allows for doodling, we named our new app Moodle (Memorized Doodle). The goal was to develop an interactive flashcard app accessible to all ages that uses both doodling and typing for studying.”

This year’s Congressional App Challenge set new records, with an unprecedented 382 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions—surpassing the previous high of 374. An incredible 12,682 students from across the country participated, representing a growth of over 1,000 students compared to 2023. These talented students submitted an astounding 3,881 original applications, showcasing their creativity, passion for technology, and the limitless potential of America’s next generation of innovators. This surge in participation reflects the increasing excitement around STEM and highlights a bright future for American innovation.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival.

The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.

The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2025, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
