Your Medicine wins Rep. Buddy Carter’s 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Georgia’s First District
Rep. Buddy Carter has named Yeonji Lee, a eleventh grader at Richmond Hill High School, as the winner of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Georgia’s First District.
When asked what inspired the creation of Your Medicine, the student said, “From hearing about the tragic death of actress Brittany Murphy in 2009, I was inspired to build this app, YourMedicine. Murphy’s death was caused by acute pneumonia combined with the misuse of various medications. She had been suffering from flu-like symptoms and pneumonia but, instead of seeking professional medical care, she and those around her attempted to self-medicate. This led to a dangerous intake of over-the-counter drugs like painkillers, decongestants, and cough suppressants, along with prescription antibiotics, which ultimately resulted in her system being overwhelmed. None of the medications on their own were toxic, but the combination and excessive amounts contributed to respiratory failure and death. Shocked by Murphy’s death, I conducted more research about unintentional overdose due to lack of medical knowledge and realized that so many people are suffering from drugs’ risky interactions and side effects. Motivated by this case, I developed an app that seeks to prevent drug misuse by offering an easy-to-use tool that helps users determine whether a medication is safe for them based on their specific medical conditions. The app aims to bridge the knowledge gap that often leads to fatal outcomes like Murphy’s by providing accurate information about drugs. It helps users to make informed decisions about their health, avoiding dangerous medications or dosages that could worsen their conditions. ”
This year’s Congressional App Challenge set new records, with an unprecedented 382 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions—surpassing the previous high of 374. An incredible 12,682 students from across the country participated, representing a growth of over 1,000 students compared to 2023. These talented students submitted an astounding 3,881 original applications, showcasing their creativity, passion for technology, and the limitless potential of America’s next generation of innovators. This surge in participation reflects the increasing excitement around STEM and highlights a bright future for American innovation.
The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival.
The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.
The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2025, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
