EcoGoal wins Rep. Kweisi Mfume’s 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Maryland’s Seventh District
Rep. Kweisi Mfume has named Peter Yang and Viv Raghavan of Gilman School as the winners of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Maryland’s Seventh District.
When asked what inspired the creation of EcoGoal, the students said, “Before starting the challenge, we extensively researched potential problems affecting those around us in our school. Having asked club leaders, teachers, and students alike, we eventually narrowed down our app to benefit and enhance clubs and accordingly narrowed down our investigations to club leaders and members. After reaching out to leaders of various clubs in my school community, we found a common thematic problem with all of them. Regardless of the club, most of them needed help organizing events or hosting club meetings effectively.
For example, our school has an environmental protection club that often hosts events to encourage more composting of school food after lunch and to clean up surrounding environments near our school. Unfortunately, we noticed that the club leaders or members usually have trouble communicating with their members or others whom they wish to inform (i.e., reminding the general student body to be vigilant of composting) and also don’t have a way to share their objectives and tasks effectively. We developed this application to cater to club leaders and other clubs in general who want to inform others of their goals. We hope that our application will provide an easy-to-use yet powerful service for communication and planning for not just our environmental sustainability clubs but also any school club or organization that is centered around tasks.”
This year’s Congressional App Challenge set new records, with an unprecedented 382 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions—surpassing the previous high of 374. An incredible 12,682 students from across the country participated, representing a growth of over 1,000 students compared to 2023. These talented students submitted an astounding 3,881 original applications, showcasing their creativity, passion for technology, and the limitless potential of America’s next generation of innovators. This surge in participation reflects the increasing excitement around STEM and highlights a bright future for American innovation.
The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival.
The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.
The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2025, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
