SparkLab wins Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Michigan’s 12th District

Rep. Rashida Tlaib has named Zaynib Ahmad of Edsel Ford High School and Zahraa Asfar of Michigan Great Lakes Virtual Academy as the winners of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Michigan’s 12th District.

When asked what inspired the creation of SparkLab, the students said, “We were inspired to create SparkLab after recognizing a significant gap in the availability of affordable programs that nurture the passions of students in Dearborn. Many of the programs in the city come with high costs, leaving low-income families unable to participate and resulting in an equity gap. This challenge is not unique to Dearborn. A national study by After School Alliance showed that ”nearly 25 million children in the U.S. lack access to after-school programs”, which expresses the importance and scale of this issue.

Motivated by this, we saw a clear need for a solution that could address both local and global gaps in educational opportunities. That’s how SparkLab was born—a virtual platform designed to offer accessible, cost-effective resources to students, regardless of their location or background. By making SparkLab a virtual program, we aimed to remove barriers that prevent so many children from pursuing their interests and passions, ensuring that every student has the chance to learn and grow.

But we didn’t stop there. We knew that it wasn’t enough to simply provide students with access to programs. We wanted to ensure that what they learned would have a lasting impact on their futures. This led to the development of an additional feature within SparkLab: the Community Fair. The Community Fair is a platform for students to grow their entrepreneurial skills by creating, marketing, and sharing their products with their community. By incorporating this element, we aimed to build an entrepreneurial mindset within our learners, encouraging creativity and innovation, and growing their confidence. Our goal was to not only inspire students to dream big but also to give them the tools and experiences they need to bring those dreams to life.”

This year’s Congressional App Challenge set new records, with an unprecedented 382 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions—surpassing the previous high of 374. An incredible 12,682 students from across the country participated, representing a growth of over 1,000 students compared to 2023. These talented students submitted an astounding 3,881 original applications, showcasing their creativity, passion for technology, and the limitless potential of America’s next generation of innovators. This surge in participation reflects the increasing excitement around STEM and highlights a bright future for American innovation.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival.

The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.

The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2025, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
