SymptomSearch wins Rep. Ritchie Torres’ 2024 Congressional App Challenge in New York’s 15th District

Rep. Ritchie Torres has named Dustin Nguyen, a twelfth grader at Bronx High School of Science, as the winner of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in New York’s 15th District.

When asked what inspired the creation of SymptomSearch, the student said, “Growing up in lower-income households, my partner Andrew and I experienced firsthand the barriers to healthcare access. For us, clinics, urgent care, and hospitals often felt like distant dreams, with costs that could easily devastate our families financially. Our lived experience with the struggles of navigating healthcare determined us to change this narrative. In this project, we created SymptomSearch. This innovative app is more than just a tool—it’s a lifeline for those who have felt the weight of inadequate healthcare. Designed for accessibility on Web Browser, iOS, and Android, SymptomSearch aims to empower individuals by providing a user-friendly experience that helps them seek the care they need without fear of financial ruin. SymptomSearch provides accessibility to all people, regardless of status or financial stability.

Our mission is clear: we refuse to let anyone else endure the hardships we have faced. With SymptomSearch, we envision a future where everyone has the tools to access affordable healthcare, ensuring that no one is left behind in their time of need. In every aspect of our project, from the technology we employ to the design of the user interface, we are guided by the principle that healthcare should be a right, not a privilege. SymptomSearch is a testament to our belief that with the right tools and information, everyone can make informed decisions about their health. Our journey is driven by a profound commitment to social equity and the unwavering belief that a healthier future is possible for all.”

This year’s Congressional App Challenge set new records, with an unprecedented 382 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions—surpassing the previous high of 374. An incredible 12,682 students from across the country participated, representing a growth of over 1,000 students compared to 2023. These talented students submitted an astounding 3,881 original applications, showcasing their creativity, passion for technology, and the limitless potential of America’s next generation of innovators. This surge in participation reflects the increasing excitement around STEM and highlights a bright future for American innovation.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival.

The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.

The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2025, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
