Farmer’s Markets of WV wins Rep. Carol Miller’s 2024 Congressional App Challenge in West Virginia’s First District
Rep. Carol Miller has named Anna Elkins, a twelfth grader at Cabell Midland HIgh School as the winner of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in West Virginia’s First District.
When asked what inspired the creation of Farmer’s Markets of WV, the student said, “I was inspired to create an app for West Virginia’s farmers markets because of a personal connection to my home state’s agricultural history and culture. Coming from Appalachia, where local community and self-sustainability are staples of my upbringing, I was always aware that buying directly from the farm was better than any store bought produce. Farmers markets are so much more than just a simple market where one buys bags of fresh, locally grown produce. They represent a rich history of culture, tradition, and economic benefits for the state.
With West Virginia grappling with issues such as economic change and poor health among its population, I saw a way to encourage eating locally and keeping a tradition in agriculture that is gradually slipping away. West Virginia’s farming history has developed into our modern system by promoting a relationship between sustainable growers and buyers. I’ve personally seen how this relationship has had great benefits in the economy and community as seen in both North and South Carolina.
Using location based services also allows my app to provide an effortless way for people to find markets near their location, and educate them about the historical values and health benefits of shopping locally. This app is part of a broader dedication to the community, making a connection between community and local farmers. In addition, we’re working towards making West Virginia healthier through fresh food. Farmers markets also put more money in local farmers’ hands who help keep our economy running while benefitting from sustainable systems.”
This year’s Congressional App Challenge set new records, with an unprecedented 382 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions—surpassing the previous high of 374. An incredible 12,682 students from across the country participated, representing a growth of over 1,000 students compared to 2023. These talented students submitted an astounding 3,881 original applications, showcasing their creativity, passion for technology, and the limitless potential of America’s next generation of innovators. This surge in participation reflects the increasing excitement around STEM and highlights a bright future for American innovation.
The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival.
The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.
The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2025, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
