NeuroChess wins Rep. Mark DeSaulnier’s 2024 Congressional App Challenge in California’s 10th District
Rep. Mark DeSaulnier has named Anish Ummadi, Josh Zeng, Vikrant Ganesan, and Sudith Thota of Dublin High School as the winners of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in California’s 10th District.
When asked what inspired the creation of NeuroChess, the students said, “The inspiration for Neurochess came from witnessing a close friend’s struggles with ADHD. As a team, we saw firsthand how challenging it was for them to maintain focus and engage in tasks that required sustained attention.
Chess is a game of patience, foresight, and strategy, which can be challenging for individuals with ADHD. However, it also offers a structured environment that encourages focus and discipline, making it an ideal tool for improving these skills. Through Neurochess, we want to offer a platform where chess becomes a way of nurturing attention and cognitive growth.
Neurochess goes beyond simply playing chess. Our neural AI feature offers personalized predictions and insights, which help users better understand the game while improving their focus and decision-making abilities. Additionally, our instructional videos allow users to learn tactics at their own pace, reinforcing the habits of patience and strategic thinking that can benefit those with ADHD.
Since launching the site, it has received over 1,000 visits, and the feedback from users has been incredibly encouraging. Seeing how they engage with both the AI predictions and video content confirms that Neurochess is making a meaningful impact. It’s helping users improve their attention and cognitive agility. What began as a project inspired by a friend’s experience with ADHD has now become a platform that empowers individuals to unlock their potential through chess. As a team, we are proud to be making a difference and excited to continue building on this mission.”
This year’s Congressional App Challenge set new records, with an unprecedented 382 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions—surpassing the previous high of 374. An incredible 12,682 students from across the country participated, representing a growth of over 1,000 students compared to 2023. These talented students submitted an astounding 3,881 original applications, showcasing their creativity, passion for technology, and the limitless potential of America’s next generation of innovators. This surge in participation reflects the increasing excitement around STEM and highlights a bright future for American innovation.
The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival.
The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.
The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2025, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
