SafeHavenAI wins Rep. Vern Buchanan’s 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Florida’s 16th District

Rep. Vern Buchanan has named Manav Pulluru of Out Of Door Academy and Ashni Singh of Choate Rosemary Hall as the winners of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Florida’s 16th District.

When asked what inspired the creation of SafeHavenAI, the students said, “Manav had a great grandfather who fell and broke his hip, causing him to become bedridden, and Ashni had a grandparent who passed away after a fall.  We realized that these experiences are all too common among those over 65. These falls changed our family’s lives and has inspired us to ensure others don’t have to suffer or lose their life to a preventable fall.

After extensive research,  we learned 1 in 4 of adults over 65 will fall every year. That is 36 million falls a year! 10% of these falls will result in death in the first one month, 33% in the following year. In Florida particularly, 20% of the population is over 65, a 33% increase from the rest of the country. Unintentional falls are the largest cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries in Florida adults over the age of 65. Those that survive suffer significant disability, and it strains the entire family’s resources in caretaking. These disabilities can be hospitalization, displacement from their home, depression, worsening of medical issues and isolation, and many more.

SafeHavenAI was developed with the guidance of clinical experts, technologists and scientists to ensure it is evidence-based, and uses proven fall risk mediation and screening.  Through this solution, we hope to eliminate preventable falls in seniors, helping families like ours save resources and ensure their loved one is safer in their living environment.”

This year’s Congressional App Challenge set new records, with an unprecedented 382 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions—surpassing the previous high of 374. An incredible 12,682 students from across the country participated, representing a growth of over 1,000 students compared to 2023. These talented students submitted an astounding 3,881 original applications, showcasing their creativity, passion for technology, and the limitless potential of America’s next generation of innovators. This surge in participation reflects the increasing excitement around STEM and highlights a bright future for American innovation.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival.

The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.

The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2025, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
