Lyme-Aid wins Rep. Jerry Nadler’s 2024 Congressional App Challenge in New York’s 12th District

Rep. Jerry Nadler has named Drew Goodman, a twelfth grader at Dwight-Englewood School, as the winner of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in New York’s 12th District.

When asked what inspired the creation of Lyme-Aid, the student said, “For four years, I watched my father, my greatest supporter and someone I viewed as indestructible, struggle with the effects of Lyme Disease: recurrent headaches, brain fog, fatigue, and nausea. Unable to stand by and do nothing, I reached out to Project Lyme, an organization dedicated to educating and assisting those affected by Lyme Disease, to find ways to get involved. After an extensive interview process, I was selected as the youngest member of the Emerging Leaders Board.

As a junior board member for the past two years, I have planned educational events and fundraisers. Additionally, I have brainstormed new strategies for raising awareness and educating others about tick-borne illness. Currently, the board and I are starting the process of creating a podcast to provide accessible information. Serving on this board has allowed me to make a tangible impact in addressing this underdiagnosed and underrepresented illness.

Through my work with Project Lyme, listening to fellow board members’ stories, and witnessing my dad’s journey in seeking treatment, I realized the urgent need for better resources and support systems for those suffering from Lyme. Motivated by this need, this past summer I developed a mobile app named Lyme-Aid, which is designed to help Lyme sufferers track their symptoms, access educational resources, and receive emotional support when needed.

Through my involvement with Project Lyme and Lyme-Aid, I am proud to have transformed my personal connection to Lyme Disease into action, helping others navigate their battles with the tools they need. I am determined to continue advocating for Lyme patients and supporting my father in the best way I know how.”

This year’s Congressional App Challenge set new records, with an unprecedented 382 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions—surpassing the previous high of 374. An incredible 12,682 students from across the country participated, representing a growth of over 1,000 students compared to 2023. These talented students submitted an astounding 3,881 original applications, showcasing their creativity, passion for technology, and the limitless potential of America’s next generation of innovators. This surge in participation reflects the increasing excitement around STEM and highlights a bright future for American innovation.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival.

The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.

The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2025, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
