Homonium wins Rep. Lloyd Doggett’s 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Texas’ 37th District

Rep. Lloyd Doggett has named Harshadha Chaganti and Yuejia Yeong of Westwood High School, as the winner of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Texas’ 37th District.

When asked what inspired the creation of Homonym, the students said, “Our inspiration for creating Homonium came from a shared realization that too many people, especially those from vulnerable or underserved communities, struggle to access affordable legal assistance for common legal issues. As a team, we were particularly moved by the stories of people who face serious legal challenges—like domestic violence, workplace discrimination, or immigration-related concerns—without the knowledge or resources to seek help.

We’ve seen how the legal system can be overwhelming, complicated, and expensive for individuals who don’t have legal expertise. This is especially true for people in low-income households or immigrant communities who might not have the financial means to hire a lawyer or navigate the legal system on their own. We wanted to build something that could address this gap, offering legal knowledge and tools to those who need it the most.

Our team was also motivated by the belief that legal aid should not be a privilege for the few but a right for all. Every individual should have access to basic legal help, whether it’s understanding their rights as tenants, reporting workplace violations, or securing safety from domestic violence. Homonium was created to fulfill this vision—an app that provides free, instant, and reliable legal support to those who need it, no matter their financial situation.

We aimed to leverage technology, particularly AI, to make legal aid more accessible. By providing a platform that users can access anytime, from anywhere, we hope to make a difference in how legal services are distributed, breaking down barriers that prevent many from getting the help they deserve.”

This year’s Congressional App Challenge set new records, with an unprecedented 382 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions—surpassing the previous high of 374. An incredible 12,682 students from across the country participated, representing a growth of over 1,000 students compared to 2023. These talented students submitted an astounding 3,881 original applications, showcasing their creativity, passion for technology, and the limitless potential of America’s next generation of innovators. This surge in participation reflects the increasing excitement around STEM and highlights a bright future for American innovation.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival.

The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.

The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2025, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
