Credu wins Rep. Sharice Davids’s 2021 Congressional App Challenge in Kansas’s Third District

Rep. Sharice Davids has named Dylan Kneidel, Dellie Wright, and Madeline Watson from Blue Valley High School as the winners of the 2021 Congressional App Challenge in Kansas’s Third District.

When asked what inspired the creation of Credu, the students said, “We created this app in order to educate those interested in both cryptocurrencies and military-grade cryptography. Cryptocurrencies are thought to be the inflation hedge of the future; the modern equivalent of gold in the 20th century. It is essential for our younger generations to understand this critical realm of the economy. Lots of current buyers are hesitant to purchase cryptocurrencies simply because of their lack of understanding of how cryptocurrencies work; Credu aims to combat this and create more educated members of the economy.

AES and SHA-256 are two hashing algorithms that are crucial for government security; they are used to protect both secret and top-secret information. We added a functionality to allow users to interact with these two algorithms, which helps give a better understanding of each. It is important for people to understand how the government keeps our sensitive data safe, especially since there have historically been high tensions with foreign nations who have access to advanced encryption and decryption technology.

Our priority in the development of this app was the education of the general public on more advanced topics such as cryptocurrencies and cryptography. It is important for people of all generations to understand these modern topics, in order to create both a more educated economy and a better understanding of government security.”

The 2021 Congressional App Challenge yielded 2,101 fully functioning apps. After eighteen months of disruptions to educational cadences for students everywhere, the Congressional App Challenge came roaring back with 7,174 students registering for this year’s competition. All told, 340 Members of Congress hosted Congressional App Challenges in their districts across 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Mariana Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Washington, D.C.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival. The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from Omidyar Network, AWS, theCoderSchool, Facebook, Replit, Accenture, and others.

The 2022 Congressional App Challenge will launch in June of 2022, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
