Sun Scan wins Rep. Robert Garcia’s 2023 Congressional App Challenge in California’s 42nd District

When asked what inspired the creation of Sun Scan, the student said, “My inspiration for creating this app stemmed from my experience during an internship focused on UV sensor research for outdoor laborers who frequently encounter extreme sun exposure as part of their professions. During this internship, I delved into the challenges faced by outdoor workers, many of whom lack adequate healthcare coverage and access to comprehensive education about the effects of UV rays. It’s essential to note that this gap in UV education extends beyond just outdoor workers; it’s a widespread issue affecting people across various demographics. I was particularly moved to take action because UV sensors, while valuable tools, are often costly and may not provide a practical solution for everyone. My motivation to develop a free app centered around my deep concern for this subject, amplified by personal experience as I lost a loved one to melanoma. I wanted to ensure that accessible, informative resources were available to raise awareness about the importance of sun safety and UV radiation. In creating this app, my goal was to make UV index information readily available to everyone by offering personalized advice and recommendations based on the UV index for their specific location and to help people remember to wear their sunscreen which is a crucial part of everyday sun health. By doing so, I hope to equip individuals with the tools and knowledge they need to protect themselves from the harmful effects of UV radiation. This project is not just an app; it’s a heartfelt endeavor to promote sun safety, informed decision-making, and ultimately, a healthier future for all.”
