Memory Assist wins Rep. Alma S. Adams’ 2024 Congressional App Challenge in North Carolina’s 12th District

Rep. Alma S. Adams has named Muhammad Fawwaz of South Iredell High School and Hadi Abdul of North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics as the winners of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in North Carolina’s 12th District.

When asked what inspired the creation of Memory Assist, the students said, “The key inspiration for Memory Assist came from my personal experience with my grandfather, who has milder dementia and struggles with memory loss. Watching him face these challenges firsthand deeply influenced the development of this project. Seeing him forget names and faces, even of close family members, was a difficult and emotional experience for all of us. It highlighted just how much memory loss can impact relationships, and I wanted to find a way to help him and others like him maintain a stronger connection with their loved ones.

Alzheimer’s and dementia affect millions of people worldwide. In North Carolina alone 11.6% of the adults who are 65 and older have Alzheimer’s and 21.5% have dementia. In many cases, the inability to remember loved ones creates a painful distance in relationships. Witnessing this firsthand made it clear that we needed a tool that could help bridge this gap, offering patients a way to stay connected with their families, even as memory loss progresses. The goal was to create something practical, easy to use, and capable of providing immediate assistance when patients struggle with recognition.

We wanted to take advantage of AI technology and advancements in facial recognition to create a solution that was not only innovative but also affordable and accessible. The idea that a simple, wearable device could give patients the ability to recognize loved ones at the press of a button felt both empowering and deeply human.”

This year’s Congressional App Challenge set new records, with an unprecedented 382 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions—surpassing the previous high of 374. An incredible 12,682 students from across the country participated, representing a growth of over 1,000 students compared to 2023. These talented students submitted an astounding 3,881 original applications, showcasing their creativity, passion for technology, and the limitless potential of America’s next generation of innovators. This surge in participation reflects the increasing excitement around STEM and highlights a bright future for American innovation.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival.

The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.

The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2025, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
