OptiMetro wins Rep. Lisa McClain’s 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Michigan’s Ninth District
Rep. Lisa McClain has named Shivansh Sahni, a ninth grader at Detroit Country Day, as the winner of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Michigan’s Ninth District.
When asked what inspired the creation of OptiMetro, the student said, “Creating OptiMetro was inspired by the challenges I saw in choosing the best place to live, especially as cities continue to grow and change. With so much data available, it’s hard to make an informed decision without getting overwhelmed. I wanted to create a tool that could simplify this process, giving people a personalized recommendation based on what truly matters to them, like affordability, job opportunities, quality of life, and future potential.
Living in a fast-paced world where people often relocate for work, family, or lifestyle, I saw a need for an app that goes beyond generic rankings of cities. Many existing tools offer static data, but I wanted something dynamic that considers how cities are evolving. My interest in machine learning and data analysis led me to develop an app that could process vast amounts of data and make predictive assessments. This way, users aren’t just choosing a city based on the present but also on where it might be in the next few years.
Moreover, I was motivated by the idea of empowering people to make life-changing decisions with confidence. Whether someone is starting a new job, raising a family, or retiring, choosing the right place to live is crucial. I envisioned OptiMetro as more than just an app; it’s a companion for anyone looking to find the best place to call home, tailored to their unique needs and future goals.
The creation of OptiMetro also allowed me to integrate my passion for technology with a real-world application, demonstrating how data science can solve everyday problems. This project not only showcases the practical use of tech skills but also reflects my desire to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives.”
This year’s Congressional App Challenge set new records, with an unprecedented 382 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions—surpassing the previous high of 374. An incredible 12,682 students from across the country participated, representing a growth of over 1,000 students compared to 2023. These talented students submitted an astounding 3,881 original applications, showcasing their creativity, passion for technology, and the limitless potential of America’s next generation of innovators. This surge in participation reflects the increasing excitement around STEM and highlights a bright future for American innovation.
The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival.
The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.
The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2025, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
