MealMate wins Rep. David Scott’s 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Georgia’s 13th District

Rep. David Scott has named Anointed Enahoro, an eleventh grader at Douglas County High School, as the winner of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Georgia’s 13th District.

When asked what inspired the creation of MealMate, the student said, “The inspiration behind creating MealMate stemmed from my desire to solve a personal challenge: finding healthy, affordable meals that don’t take hours to prepare. As a busy student juggling academics, extracurricular activities, and personal projects, I often found myself reaching for fast food or convenient, unhealthy options simply because I didn’t have the time or resources to cook balanced meals. I realized that many others around me faced the same challenge, whether they were fellow students, working professionals, or families with busy schedules. I wanted to create a solution that simplifies the process of eating healthier. There are plenty of recipe apps available, but many are either overwhelming with too many options or include complicated, expensive recipes that aren’t realistic for everyday use.

My goal with MealMate was to combine simplicity with practicality—offering recipes that use common ingredients and can be made in a short amount of time. In addition, I wanted to make healthy eating more accessible. A lot of people believe that healthy food is too expensive or time-consuming to prepare, which leads them to make less nutritious choices. By using MealMate, users can discover that eating well doesn’t have to break the bank or take up a lot of time. The AI chatbot feature allows people to interact with the app in a conversational way, making it even easier to find recipes tailored to their needs and preferences.”

This year’s Congressional App Challenge set new records, with an unprecedented 382 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions—surpassing the previous high of 374. An incredible 12,682 students from across the country participated, representing a growth of over 1,000 students compared to 2023. These talented students submitted an astounding 3,881 original applications, showcasing their creativity, passion for technology, and the limitless potential of America’s next generation of innovators. This surge in participation reflects the increasing excitement around STEM and highlights a bright future for American innovation.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival.

The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.

The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2025, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
