MediTap wins Rep. Brian Mast’s 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Florida’s 21st District

Rep. Brian Mast has named Varun Singh, an eleventh grader at South Fork High School, as the winner of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Florida’s 21st District.

When asked what inspired the creation of MediTap, the student said, “My mother works in the medical field, and one of the biggest issues that hospitals face is due to hospital readmissions, especially due to mismanagement of medications.  She has seen and discussed these issues with various staff members in the field, and they agree that misuse of medications is a large issue that plagues their hospitals. These unnecessary visits cost the US 100 to 300 billion dollars per year. Failure to use medications properly also poses a severe risk to patient safety.

Missing doses, overdoses, not following dietary restrictions and stopping medication early can lead to worsening conditions and new side effects. Often patients will go to the hospital with these conditions and neither the patient or the doctor will know the cause. Patients do not track what they take, when they take it and don’t often know why they take a certain medicine.

Both my parents are also on chronic medications, and my mother has struggled with taking her medications on time due to her busy schedule. When I heard about complications from her missing doses, it inspired me to try and develop a solution to help her and patients like her manage their medications so they never miss a dose, are educated about the medication they take, and stay on schedule as prescribed by their doctors to avoid complications from non-adherence. In return, this also helps the staff at hospitals take care of a patient because they can see logs of what the patient is on and can treat them appropriately.”

This year’s Congressional App Challenge set new records, with an unprecedented 382 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions—surpassing the previous high of 374. An incredible 12,682 students from across the country participated, representing a growth of over 1,000 students compared to 2023. These talented students submitted an astounding 3,881 original applications, showcasing their creativity, passion for technology, and the limitless potential of America’s next generation of innovators. This surge in participation reflects the increasing excitement around STEM and highlights a bright future for American innovation.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival.

The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.

The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2025, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
