Coursify wins Rep. Zoe Lofgren’s 2024 Congressional App Challenge in California’s 18th District

Rep. Zoe Lofgren has named Anav Bordia and Mithil Patil of Basis Independent Silicon Valley as the winners of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in California’s 18th District.

When asked what inspired the creation of Coursify, the students said, “In our classes at school, there were always topics that the teachers said were out of the scope for the class. We’ve always been interested in those topics but have struggled to find quality structured information about them. Whenever we turned to the internet it would take hours of digging through videos, articles, and tutorials to come up with some good information about the topic we were interested in. Even then, everything felt scattered, with one video open in one tab, an article open in another, and no comprehensive way to study it all together. That’s when it hit us: what if we could create our own courses? Instead of relying on whatever we could find online, why not gather the best resources automatically, organize them, and build something that actually made sense? We imagined a tool that would pull everything together—videos, summaries, quizzes—so that we could stop chasing down information and start learning in a structured way.

That’s how Coursify was born. It’s a platform designed to take the headache out of learning by creating organized courses with minimal effort. You give it a course title and unit titles, and it does the rest, gathering videos, generating summaries, and even creating quizzes to test your knowledge. We built it because we needed it ourselves and now it’s here to help anyone who’s ever felt lost while trying to learn something new. It turns the frustration of endless searching into a simple, streamlined process where learning finally makes sense.”

This year’s Congressional App Challenge set new records, with an unprecedented 382 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions—surpassing the previous high of 374. An incredible 12,682 students from across the country participated, representing a growth of over 1,000 students compared to 2023. These talented students submitted an astounding 3,881 original applications, showcasing their creativity, passion for technology, and the limitless potential of America’s next generation of innovators. This surge in participation reflects the increasing excitement around STEM and highlights a bright future for American innovation.

The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival.

The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.

The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2025, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
