Gluconnect wins Rep. Young Kim’s 2024 Congressional App Challenge in California’s 40th District
Rep. Young Kim has named Stanley Wang and Jack Liu of Troy High School as the winners of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in California’s 40th District.
When asked what inspired the creation of Gluconnect, the students said, “My father suffers from diabetes, and my partner Jack has grandparents who suffer from diabetes. Jack’s grandparents and my father have often expressed frustration over having to manually input and track data from the glucometer. This is very inconvenient, and even led my father to skip tracking his blood sugar levels after meals because it was too time-consuming. It also may be difficult to afford the current wireless-enabled glucometers on the market as they are priced higher than non-wireless glucometers. Gluconnect solves this as with just a 15$ Raspberry Pi, it turns any already-existing non-wireless Glucometer into a wireless one, capable of automatically transmitting any reading through bluetooth, which is recorded and tracked by the Gluconnect app.
Another concern we had as a family was our inability to monitor our father’s blood readings. If he happens to be away from home, we would still like to be able to keep tabs on his blood sugar levels and health. Gluconnect solves this as all blood readings are synchronized with the backend server as well, and users can authorize other users to view their glucose readings at any time. This allows for users to easily share their glucose readings with trusted family members or healthcare professionals. The user can also set a threshold for abnormal readings in the Gluconnect app, and authorized family members are automatically warned of abnormal readings when detected, which would be critical in emergency situations.”
This year’s Congressional App Challenge set new records, with an unprecedented 382 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions—surpassing the previous high of 374. An incredible 12,682 students from across the country participated, representing a growth of over 1,000 students compared to 2023. These talented students submitted an astounding 3,881 original applications, showcasing their creativity, passion for technology, and the limitless potential of America’s next generation of innovators. This surge in participation reflects the increasing excitement around STEM and highlights a bright future for American innovation.
The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival.
The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.
The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2025, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
