Tennis IQ wins Rep. Susie Lee’s 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Nevada’s Third District
Rep. Susie Lee has named Xuanzhe Wang and Mingwei Li of Hyde Park Middle School as well as Henry Chen and Brady Chen of Diamond Bar High School as the winners of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Nevada’s Third District.
When asked what inspired the creation of Tennis IQ, the students said, “What inspired us to create this app was a desire to make high quality tennis coaching accessible to everyone. We realized that many players, from beginners to advanced, often struggle to get consistent, detailed feedback without spending a lot of money on coaching sessions. Professional level analysis can be expensive and out of reach for most people, and we wanted to bridge that gap. Tennis should be an inclusive sport where everyone has the opportunity to improve, regardless of their financial situation or access to professional coaching.
We were also inspired by the power of technology to provide meaningful, actionable insights. We saw how tools like MediaPipe and OpenCV could be used to break down tennis strokes in a way that reveals what makes professional players so effective. We understood that with the right tools, we could make this type of advanced analysis available to any player, anywhere. By creating an app that uses these technologies, we hoped to empower players to take control of their own training, improve their skills more efficiently, and get the kind of feedback that is typically only available to elite athletes.
After researching existing tennis apps, we discovered a significant gap in the market. While AI analysis apps exist for other sports like baseball, there’s currently no app that analyzes tennis strokes. Most major tennis apps that use AI focus only on tracking points or determining whether balls land in or out. This gap presented a unique opportunity to create something truly innovative and unique for the tennis community.”
This year’s Congressional App Challenge set new records, with an unprecedented 382 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions—surpassing the previous high of 374. An incredible 12,682 students from across the country participated, representing a growth of over 1,000 students compared to 2023. These talented students submitted an astounding 3,881 original applications, showcasing their creativity, passion for technology, and the limitless potential of America’s next generation of innovators. This surge in participation reflects the increasing excitement around STEM and highlights a bright future for American innovation.
The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival.
The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.
The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2025, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
