Profit Quest wins Rep. Morgan McGarvey’s 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Kentucky’s Third District
Rep. Morgan McGarvey has named Suriya Nithyanandan of DuPont Manual High School, Vedant Garg of Gatton Academy, Adarsh Kannappan of DuPont Manual High School, and Rahbe Abass of DuPont Manual High School as the winners of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Kentucky’s Third District.
When asked what inspired the creation of Profit Quest, the students said, “Christianity represents wealth as a gift from God, a gift that can be used in the pursuit of happiness and the pursuit of service. Hinduism represents wealth as a sort of ‘green energy’ that is received by those who concentrate their energy on mental and physical efforts. In Islamic readings, wealth is considered a blessing from God and a pleasure in life. A common trend throughout many religions is that money is a blessing, something an individual gets to enjoy after a life of hard work and gratuity. Money is great, but without an understanding of it, we tend to find ourselves without it. Without strong financial literacy, managing money and pursuing growth opportunities can feel unfamiliar and challenging. A life of hardship can go unnoticed, replaced by confusion about what to do with your money. According to the United States Financial Literacy Index, approximately 50% of Americans lack a basic financial understanding. Almost 175,000,000 people! Additionally, less than half of U.S. states require or provide primary education resources to increase financial literacy. How can we be expected to live comfortably without being given any way to understand money?
This singular question is what inspired us to create ProfitQuest. Just like ourselves, many middle school and high school students have no idea how to incorporate their learning skills into money. Before ProfitQuest, we didn’t either. By creating ProfitQuest we’ve dug a way out. Now, students have a platform that facilitates their growth in financial literacy. Splitting up key financial literacy topics into 5 units, ProfitQuest was built for that 50% that don’t understand their money and those residents of the states not providing financial education. We hope that ProfitQuest itself has a lasting impact upon the minds, businesses, and economies of our nation’s tomorrow. So what do we expect? We expect ProfitQuest to ingrain the importance of financial literacy to schools, parents, and students, build a community where the finances are just as important as core classes, and introduce one of the most dynamic and self-affecting topics to students around the country, and eventually the world. In short, ProfitQuest was inspired by national and global ignorance of the understanding of wealth, and a fiery passion to burn that ignorance to ashes.”
This year’s Congressional App Challenge set new records, with an unprecedented 382 Members of the House of Representatives hosting competitions—surpassing the previous high of 374. An incredible 12,682 students from across the country participated, representing a growth of over 1,000 students compared to 2023. These talented students submitted an astounding 3,881 original applications, showcasing their creativity, passion for technology, and the limitless potential of America’s next generation of innovators. This surge in participation reflects the increasing excitement around STEM and highlights a bright future for American innovation.
The Congressional App Challenge is an official initiative of the U.S. House of Representatives, where Members of Congress host contests in their districts for middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science. This resounding show of bipartisan support emphasizes the critical importance of STEM education in today’s rapidly evolving world. Each participating Member of Congress selects a winning app from their district, and each winning team is invited to showcase their winning app to Congress during our annual #HouseOfCode festival.
The program is a public-private partnership made possible through funding from the Broadcom Foundation, AWS, Rise, theCoderSchool, Apple, and others.
The 2024 Congressional App Challenge will launch in May of 2025, and eligible students can pre-register for the competition now.
